Touched By God's Love

By Roger McClain

July 2009

I was drawn to tears two mornings in a row as I watched 90 plus children at the Chinle, Arizona Navajo Nation Vacation Bible School, opening with songs of praise to our God.  They were jumping, clapping hands, sweet smiling faces --- all with loud voices singing the praise songs.  It is SO touching to see God's loving work of our Glenkirk people sharing God's love for such a needy group of young children and the response it arouses in them.

Bibles and Books for India

Thank you to everyone who participated in donating your unused Bibles and books for India.  In October of 2007 we shipped 24,000 and in July 2009 we shipped another 21,000 Bible and books to India Bible Literature.  With the assumption that these books are sold for an average of $1.00 (which is quite low), the sales will translate to $45,000 for India Bible Literature to be utilized in some or all of the following ways:

A Blessing from the Hand of God

Glenkirk and its 15 year faithful relationship with Trinity Presbyterian Church is a blessing from the hand of God to us!  Already I can see that you give whatever you can...and it's not a 'holy handout'... you are our extended church family and that's what your visits here have felt like to me.  It's like members of my family have jumped out of their cars and trucks and vans to pitch in and be part of our life.  We think of our sisters and brothers and pray for you in all the other months, not just in December and July when we know you are on your way or when yoy have jut left and the glow of love and care are still fresh in our memories.  I know that whatever the Spirit 'shimmers' for you , upon your hearts and minds, whatever 'speaks to you' for lifing up this congregation and being part of our larger ministry here in the Navajo Nation...I know you will be here for us and for the Lord.  God bless you and keep you today and in all the days to come, our dear friends.

Blessings,

Rev. Constance (Khan) McIntosh

Jim Brennan Leads the Search for the Remains of Grandma Gray

Chinle Mission Team

July 30, 2009

Grandma Gray was Pastor Joseph Gray's wife.  Pastor Gray served as the minister for Trinity Presbyterian Church in Chinle from 1968-1993.  Grandma Gray died during that time and was buried on the grounds of the Church.  Pastor Gray recently died at the age of 101. The Gray family requested that Grandma Gray be brought back to California to be buried next to Joseph. During the July 2009 Mission Trip to Chinle, Arizona, Jim Brennan was assisted by Gilbert, Jasper , and Michael.  They dug a four foot hole, releasing the 250 pound headstone and digging up a small golden box with the ashes of Grandma.  They placed the small golden box with ashes in a spaghetti pot, alongside of the headstone in the back of Jim's truck.  On the journey home, Jim and Lee Ann Brennan partied when they crossed the Arizona and California border because it had been a long time since Grandma Gray had been in California.  With all due respect, the family of Grandma Gray will be picking up Grandma and taking her to be placed next to Joseph.  Thank  you Jim, Lee Anne, and team for a job well done... and what an adventure!

Short-term Teams with a Long-Term View

March 12, 2009

In the beginning we saw short-term mission as a one-time deal.  You go, you come home, and you've done your part for mission.  But as we have returned year after year to the Tumutumu Hospital in Kenya, we began to notice that our experiences were vastly different from year to year even though we were in the same place.  We made deeper friendships with people, and the impact on us was greater too.  We noticed our time in Kenya seemed less distant when we returned home.  The thing about fostering short-term with a long-term view is to see God work over time.

Culture Shock!

Glenkirk  Woman Kisses a Kenyan Giraffe?

March 12, 2009

Crossing cultures can be more difficult for some than others.  Culture shock can be the realization of how inadequately our world fits with the one we are visiting.  Sometimes this can overwhelm our normal coping mechanisms.  Culture shock really took one of our Kenyan team members by surprise.  We found Joy Hunt Smith doing what we thought was kissing Miss Daisy, a lively and friendly giraffe living at the Giraffe Park in Karen, Kenya.  But will all due respect, Joy was really feeding the giraffe mouth to mouth!

Navajo Living in Poverty

March 12, 2009

Native American people are beautiful people who have gone through great struggles and continue to struggle. Many are still living way below the poverty line.  Once again Jim and LeeAnne Brennan created a fabulous Shepherd Tree progam, and collected 320 Christmas gifts for the Navajo children and the residents of the local nursing home in Chinle, Arizona.

Newborns are Dumped Anonymously

Reaching Out to the Destitute Women and Orphans Living in India

March 12, 2009

According to TIMES ONLINE, there are more tha 11 million abandoned children in India, where a growing number of newborns are being dumped anonymously on cots placed outside orphanages.  About 90% of girls who are young mothers cannot afford to keep them.  The children we hope to sponsor and visit live in a very impoverished area of India and have found shelter at the Joyce Scott Memorial Home for Destitute Women and Children.

Visitor for For His Children Orphan Care Center in Quito and Latacunga Ecuador

March 12, 2009

Currently, 50 to 60 children are cared for in three residential care homes in north-east Quito and Latacunga Ecuador.  The environment provides physical and emotional support, spiritual nurturing, and lots of tender, loving care.  Clark Vaughn, CEO, has served in this capacity since the incorporation of For His Children in 1990.  He is founder and co-director of For His Children's programs in Ecuador.  Clark spoke in all three worship services here at Glenkirk on March 22.  As a church, we have been supporting For His Children with finances and visiting short-term teams.
