Poverty is the condition of those who are more or less destitute of temporal goods.
Widespread and persistent poverty challenges us to action. The painful truth is that nearly three billion people - half of the world’s population are considered poor. But poverty isn’t simply a numbers game. It’s about scores of men, women, and children during unimaginable obstacles that keep them from fulfilling their most basic human rights and achieving their individual potentials.
Each year, more than eight million people around the world die because they are too poor to stay alive.
Over one billion people – one in six people around the world-live in extreme poverty, defined as living on less than $1 a day.
Every year nearly 11 million children living in poverty die before their 5th birthday.
800 million people go to bed hungry every night.
There are over 100 million street children worldwide.
Before the time of Christ the poor were generally despised. Poverty was considered a state of inferiority.
Jesus, who exalted the weak and raised up the oppressed, was not only the Redeemer of women, of children, and of workers, but also the poor. He so elevated poverty as to endow it with dignity.
But Jesus was not satisfied with exalting the poor, He commanded that the poor be relieved. One day a rich young man asked Him what he should do to obtain eternal life: Jesus gave him this advice: “If you want to be perfect go sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” Matthew 19:21
Jesus did more: He identified Himself with the poor: On the day of the Last Judgement, He will speak these words to the elect: “I tell you the truth, whatever you did to the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me:” Matthew 25:40
God is called by many names throughout the Scriptures. Many of His names emphasize His great love for the poor.
Defender of the fatherless and widows (Deut. 10:18; Psalm 10:16-18, 40:17;68:5, and Jeremiah 22:16)
Protector of the poor (Psalm 12:5)
Rescuer of the poor (1 Samuel 2:8)
Provider of the poor (Isaiah 41:17)
Savior of the poor (Psalm 34:6)
Refuge of the poor (Psalm 14:6)
Our charity must resemble God’s who came in person to bring us help. This two-thousand year old tradition of Christian charity has completely changed the opinion of the world concerning poverty.
