VBS FAQ and Parent Info

FAQs and Parent Info

*Updated 7/10/10

Is registration closed?
Yes. Children who arrive at VBS without already submitting a registration card will be placed on a waiting list.  We will try to place all children on the waiting list into a group for the following day.

How much does it cost?
$40 per child for the week. Includes t-shirt, snacks and activities.

What should my child wear?
Please have your child wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes each day to VBS (not flip-flops or Heelys). On the first day of VBS, your child will be given a VBS t-shirt and nametag when they check in with their Crew Leader at their assigned group. Your child should wear their VBS t-shirt every day!

How does the closing program and picnic work?
Families and friends are invited watch Friday's closing program from the Event  Center. Come see what your child experienced at VBS. After the program, join us for a picnic on the lawn.  Each family provides their own lunch. The Sunday following VBS, (July 18) all children are invited to join us at either our 9:45am or 11:11am service to sing VBS songs for the congregation.  Counselors will be in the Children's Wing Courtyard between services signing t-shirts.

Where do I drop off my child each day?
1st-5th graders will check into the Worship Center each day. All 1st-5th graders should be dropped off in the Worship Center at their group’s row. Your child’s Crew Leader and team will be waiting for you each day in the same place.

Kindergarten kids have a separate program designed for them that will help them feel less overwhelmed with the large crowds of the Elementary rotations. All Kindergarteners should be checked in at the Registration Table in the Lobby of the Worship Center and walked to their group's row in the Worship Center.

Preschool campers are checked in and out of Fellowship Hall each day.  Preschool students can not be checked in at the Elementary or Kindergarten check in stations.

Doors open at 8:45am each day. An adult must check in and check out your child each day. Please do not drop off your child other than with their assigned group as they cannot check in by themselves.

Where do I pick up my child each day?
All 1st-5th graders are picked up in their classroom. Kindergarteners are picked up in ROOM 9 (depending on their group number). Preschoolers must be signed out of Fellowship Hall. VBS ends promptly each day at 1:00pm.  Parents will be given their child's classroom number and location during check in on day 1.

Note: Early dismissals are strongly discouraged. If your child needs to leave VBS early, you must pick them up before 11:30am. For the safety of your child, he or she cannot leave their group on their own and you must check them out with their Guide. Parents should go to the Children's Ministries Office located in Glenkirk's Main Office, to find the location of your child’s group to check them out.

What happens on Water Day?
All campers will have water day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of VBS including Kindergarten and Preschool. They should wear a swimsuit under their clothes and bring sunscreen and a towel. Your child will get completely wet as they enjoy sliding down inflatable water slides. If you have questions about water day, please check with your child’s Crew Leader for more information, call the Children's Ministries Team 626.914.4833 x122 or send us an email kids@glenkirkchurch.org

Where is the best place to park?
Please park in any lot that is open closest to your child's check in zone.  Some lots may be closed on certain days for certain activities. Please do not park in the red zones. Children must be checked-in and out each day by an adult. Please do not drop off your child at the curb as they cannot check-in by themselves.

Does Glenkirk serve lunch during VBS week?
Each day toward the end of VBS, children and their leaders have lunch together in their classrooms.  Lunch must be provided by parents each day.

What if my child has an injury or medical issue?
Occasionally children get injured or sick while at VBS.   Please make sure we have a cell phone and emergency number on file should we need to reach you.

How do I make a donation that is a different dollar amount shown on the online form?
Mail or drop off a check in an offering box or in the office at Glenkirk, noting “VBS Donation” on the check.

As a parent, can I watch the closing program from noon-1:00pm?
Parents are not permitted to sit with their children as all seating has been designated for groups, however, parents may stand in the Event Center and watch the program on the large video screens.

Registration

Can my child be in a group with their friends?
In order to be placed in the same group, they must be in the same grade and registered by June 30. We will do our best to accommodate your request if the above requirements have been met.

Do I need to fill out a separate form for each child?
We need one form per household.  Every child who attends VBS must have a completed registration form.

Can I complete a kid registration form if I am not the child’s parent or legal guardian?
No, only a parent or legal guardian may complete the form because we need to have the parent’s signature on the medical and photo release.

I have two kids, one is entering Kindergarten in the fall and one is 3 years old. Can they both attend VBS?
VBS is for 4 year olds thru 5th graders as of Fall 2010.

My child has a friend but they are in a different grade. Can they still be together during VBS?
We group kids by the school grade they are entering in the fall of 2010, please call our team 626.914.4833 x122 if this creates a hardship for your child.

My child is inviting a friend that doesn’t go to Glenkirk, what do I need to do to make sure they are in the same group?
Write down the friend’s full name on your registration form (reverse side) where it reads "Please place_____”. Please give a registration form to your friend’s parent. Both children need to be registered by June 30 to be placed in the same group. Remember that we group kids by grade. If the friend is in another grade, we may not be able to accomodate your request.

What if I need to change my information on a registration that I already submitted?
Please send your request to kids@glenkirkchurch.org with any changes.

I have a special needs child can they participate in VBS?
Yes, write down your child’s special need and the type of assistance he/she will need so we can make sure to match a volunteer to that group who is capable to assist. If they have an aide, have the aide attend one of our training meetings so they know what to anticipate.

I need a scholarship, can I request one online?
No, scholarship forms are available in paper only and you can get one in the church office during the week or at the Elementary sign in table on Sunday mornings.

If I need to write more information than the space allows me on the registration form, what should I do?
Email a note with the information to kids@glenkirkchurch.org.

What if my child wants to change groups during VBS?
Please do not randomly move your child to another group. For your child’s safety, this is how we know where your child is at all times. Guides are not authorized to move children to a different group. Any group changes must be approved by VBS Registration located on the patio outside on the Worship Center during VBS.
